Singapore: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s annual salary is set to increase by 64%, from the current S$2.2 million to S$3.6 million, making him the world’s highest-paid prime minister. The revised annual salary is equivalent to approximately US$2.8 million.

The new salary structure will come into effect from October 15 after the Singapore government accepted the recommendations of the 2026 Independent Committee on Salaries. The revised structure will apply to the country’s political leadership.

Along with the Prime Minister, the salaries of the Deputy Prime Minister and ministers will also increase. The Deputy Prime Minister’s annual salary will rise from S$1.87 million to S$3.06 million. The salaries of ministers will range from S$1.8 million to S$2.88 million, depending on their positions and responsibilities. From October 15, ministers will initially receive a one-time salary increase of up to 9%. Further increases will be based on performance and responsibilities.

Lawrence Wong has announced that he will donate the additional salary he receives to charitable activities for the next five years, taking into consideration the criticism that the salary increase may draw from the public.Under the plan, Wong will first receive the full salary paid by the government and then donate the increased amount to charitable activities.

Why Singapore Pays High Political Salaries

Singapore justifies its high political salaries by stating that the system is intended to attract capable people to politics, reduce the possibility of corruption and compete with high salaries available in the private sector. The country’s political salary structure has been designed by linking it to the salary levels of high-income earners. At the same time, the issue remains widely debated politically in Singapore because the salaries of political leaders are very high compared with the incomes of ordinary Singapore citizens.

The latest decision represents a major revision in the salaries of Singapore’s political leaders after 15 years. The last major change in political salaries was made in 2012.The revised structure will therefore bring a significant change to the pay of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and ministers, following the government’s acceptance of the recommendations of the 2026 Independent Committee on Salaries.
